How to import/export playlists in Itunes

One of the things we hope to do on this blog will be to trade playlists.  Although its not really 100% necessary, you may want to know how to export your playlist to XML format and to be able to import a playlist from somebody else.  The only issue with doing this, is that if you don't have all the songs in your library, it will remove those from the list during the import process.  Here is the Apple tech article on how to do this.

I have not done this in a couple of years, so I can't remember if it gives you an error and alerts you to which songs you are missing or not.  Maybe somebody can export a playlist and post it, and I can try to import it to see what happens.  I have a couple of my playlists already exported and stored in the "Playlist XML Files" Folder.

Let me know if you have any questions on this.

  1. I tried importing your playlists. It is super easy! It does give you an alert that some songs were not added to the playlist. I'll try to export one of my playlists and you can see how much overlap we have. I have 30 of the songs for "Jazzy Time" and only 17 for "Wine Time." Unrelated note, every time I read that playlist title, I feel like I need a glass of vino!

  2. Does it tell you exactly what songs you are missing, or just tells you that you are missing some? I'll probably have to just upload all the songs for each playlist. Maybe I will upload one of the two soon (your pick) and we can go from there. I think the format for reviewing huge playlists (over 50 songs) will be much different than what we are using for these new music CD's. Probably just a few comments, maybe songs/artists that fit well, some artists or song that you would suggest to add, and maybe a song or two that you would remove.

  3. It doesn't tell you which ones are missing. I think Wine Time would be the way to go. (Especially since I have very little of those songs.) I think we could just do a post. I like the idea of suggestions of songs you would add or remove.

  4. Ok, I will post the entire Wine Time playlist tonight. I may take down S1-S3. Additionally I think it is good to post the XML along with the new CD, just to make sure the songs were imported in the proper order. I'll do this from now on. However I should say that all my big playlists, wine time, jazzy stuff, etc. are meant to be shuffled.
